I was perking away happily on my new YA paranormal synopsis when suddenly I came to a screeching halt. I can't figure out what comes next.
I plot my book by writing a synopsis. Most of the time this is a fairly smooth process, but not this time. Maybe it's because this is a new genre for me and I don't know enough about it. Maybe I need to do some more work on my characters. Or maybe (horror of horrors) I need to ditch the idea and start over.
It's hard to tell. Sometimes my subconscious is sneaky and tries to get me to quit by stalling me out just because the going gets rough. But sometimes, this screeching-halt business really is a signal that there's a fundamental problem.
I won't know until I bulldoze my way through! I have to keep knocking at the basement door and say, "Come on, girls, give me something to work with!" (If you're familiar with Jennifer Crusie's writing workshops, you'll know that she refers to her "muse" as "The girls in the basement." I like that idea--I'd rather be depending on a group rather than one overworked muse.)
Today was quiet--I'm still unpacking, doing laundry and taking care of STUFF.
