Return to Critique

GOOD HUSBAND MATERIAL Page-O-Meter: 238/250 pages, or 95.2 %

Today was the first time our critique group has actually critiqued pages in a very long time. (We'd become more of a "let's go out to eat and bitch about writing" group.) I was a little nervous about it--new group, new book, whole new genre for me (YA paranormal). But my pages got a pretty warm reception, so I felt good about it. In fact, everyone's pages were strong and the critiquing felt very constructive.

I had planned to come home right after and get back to GHM, since I really want to get it turned in before I leave for Virginia Beach next week. But someone mentioned eating at Mi Cocina and I caved.

Ran a few errands and came home. Rob and I walked and ended up at Carnival (grocery store). The poor man was in sugar withdrawal because we had no sweets in the house. He bought those wretched Little Debbie Nutty Bars. I bought a bag of Kraft caramels. I made a deal with him. I won't touch his if he won't touch mine. I plan to make my caramels last (I'm eating only two per day). But they won't last if he gets his mitts on them!

I did do some writing today--six pages, dictated in the car. I'm getting perilously close to my target page count but I still have some story to tell--but that's okay. I need to cut some earlier scenes anyway, so this should work out.

Later I watched "The First 48" and judged a couple of contest entries. I enjoy reading unpublished work, and hopefully helping the authors. I dunno, though, sometimes I can be really mean. I don't give low scores, but my comments can be pretty blunt. I always try to find each entry's strong points--there's always something to praise. But I have to be honest about the weaknesses. I just hope I don't discourage people too much. I've entered contests, I've gotten nasty comments, I know how it feels!

Thanks for visiting,

Kara
