My friend Becky wanted something. She figured out how to make it happen, and I love that.
She attended a Mystery Writers of America (MWA) chapter meeting in Houston and had a great time. Of course immediately she wondered why we had nothing like that in the Dallas area. We have an active romance writer group, but the mystery writers are fragmented. Becky asked around, and no one seemed to have any answers. No one knew who to call, who was in charge, who would give permission to set up monthly meetings, etc.
So she just did it.
She found a free meeting room at a restaurant. She found a workshop presenter (my husband, Rob, and his martial arts partner Lisa). And she started advertising the meeting to anyone who would sit still long enough. She came with name badges, a sign-up sheet, flyers for subsequent meetings. And she hoped five people would show up.
About 15 did. We filled up the table. We had a great workshop, we chatted, and we ate lunch. And it was so wonderful to see Becky flush with her first success organizing an event and actually having people show up and enjoy it.
Next month she'll do it again. Her goal is to bring in enough attendees that we can expand into the adjoining space--and she let everyone know that.
So, that's the lesson for today. If you want something, don't wait for someone else to provide it. Go after it yourself. Make it happen. Announce your intentions and full speed ahead. You'll be amazed what will happen.
Until next time,
Kara

I love the idea of this blog.
I admire people like your friend who just go out and make things happen. I'm trying to be that kind of person.
YAY for you, Annie Mac.
I could be like Yoda and say, "No try, do." But I don't agree with Yoda on this one (even though I am a Jedi at heart). I'm all about "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again."
You go, girl! And I'm glad you like the blog concept.
