Having lived in one tornado alley or another my whole life, I'm usually pretty blase about severe weather. But this is the first time I've ever been out of the house, on foot, a long way from home when the tornado sirens went off. (For anyone who doesn't know, the sirens sound off if an actual tornado is spotted and possibly headed your way.)
Rob and I were walking home from a trip to the library and then to dinner at Grill 400. It was kind of cloudy and a little windy but certainly didn't seem threatening. So the sirens were a bit of a shock. I felt like we ought to take cover somewhere (that is what you're supposed to do) but Rob wanted to keep heading for home, since it wasn't even raining or very windy. So we did. The sirens went quiet, but they sounded again when we were a couple of blocks from home, and again as soon as we got home. Then we had a brief power failure and even when the lights came back on, I of course couldn't get a satellite signal on the TV. But I was able to get regular TV.
We had some serious rain, but no hail or wind like some places around us and no tornadoes. (Ft. Worth had some damage, as did Haltom City. There was talk of other tornadoes touching down in areas northeast of Dallas, but I don't know yet if there was damage.)
Anyway, added some drama to my day!
Before all that, I drove to two different banks to put money in my retirement accounts before the deadline. Then I picked up my camera from Vicki's house, went to lunch at Cafe Brazil with my writer friend Kat, then drove out to northeast Plano to pick up my taxes. (No refund for us this year, darn it!) Needless to say, I did not get a whole lot of writing done today!
Have a great weekend,
Kara
