This was a big birding day for me. It all started when a strange but cute little brown bird lit on a chair right next to me when I was eating lunch on the deck. It turned out to be a Carolina Wren. A bit later, as I was scanning the trees with my binoculars, I spotted some birds across the alley that did not look familiar. I walked across the yard so I could get a better look. Turns out they were cedar waxwings--four of them. I've always wanted to see a cedar waxwing. They're not rare or anything, but I am a neophyte birder.
Given that I had two new species already, I decided to walk to the park, where we sometimes see exotic migratory waterfowl. There we saw a big group of double-crested cormorants sunning themselves on a log. And finally, a cute little black-and-white duck that looked like an Oreo. It was a lesser scaup.
The rest of the day I wrote, and fielded comments on my column at www.romancingtheblog.com, which generated quite a discussion. Always fun to learn about the different writing processes writers have.
Tonight, Rob and I drove to my sister and brother-in-law's house for a night of bridge. Dean, my b-i-l, is taking bridge classes from Rob (who teaches at the local college). But he really wanted to play, so he could get some practical experience. I only play a little and my sister Mary not at all, but we gave it a whirl. It was pretty funny. I think it must be painful for Rob to watch us all stumbling around, completely clueless.
Thanks for visiting,
Kara
