That was the subject of the workshop at Dallas Area Romance Authors this morning, presented by fabulous writer and longtime friend Evelyn Vaughn. She has written some of my favorite paranormal romances (The Circle series for Silhouette Shadows), but she is also a college literature instructor. Her take on why we have this great divide between the books they teach in college and the books most people like to read at the beach was very interesting. She has obviously given this subject a great deal of thought and study.
After the meeting Rob and I went to MicroCenter, where we again drooled over new laptops yet couldn't come to a decision regarding which we should buy. We don't have a compelling need for a new laptop--we have one that works okay, it's just old and decrepit and has no sound. So it's hard to justify spending the big bucks.
Later I went to the grocery store (FINALLY!!) and I cooked dinner--black bean tostadas. They weren't bad but it seemed like a lot of work and not a lot of payoff. I could get a similar result with canned refried beans and sauce from a jar (although if I did it that way it would be too salty for me). You can't really go wrong with Mexican food. It satisfied, anyway.
And I saw a new bird! Driving home from the meeting I had the window open and I heard a killdeer calling. (I learned the call from my birdcall tapes, thanks, Amelia!) I looked up, and there he was flying overhead. Now, a killdeer is not an uncommon bird and I've seen them before. But this was the first I'd noticed since I started keeping records.
I had a nice long chat with my niece Pam tonight. She's 19 and SO GROWN UP I can't believe it. She and her boyfriend are planning to visit this summer some time. I haven't seen her in three years.
Hope you're having a great weekend,
Kara
